US shippers warned of stricter security rules for larger air cargo loads

US freight forwarders have been urged to prepare for stricter cargo security rules by the Airforwarders Association (AfA) or face not being able to fly larger shipments.
AfA executive director Brandon Fried said that from October shippers wishing to fly cargo that cannot be screened – due to size or volume restrictions – will need to be enrolled in one of the Transport Security Administration (TSA)’s authorised cargo security programmes. Read more here.


London Heathrow’s Proposed Third Runway: What Are The Latest Developments?

Plans for a third runway at London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR) have yet to resume following the rebound of international air traffic. The project and its associated new West Terminal will facilitate an additional 260,000 flights annually.
Proponents of the project argue a third runway will increase capacity and resilience following the pandemic. The easing of slot controls during the recent travel lul resulted in the airport obtaining additional long-haul markets and improved service to regional markets in the UK. Read more here.

The FAA Wants New Airliners To Have 2 Cockpit Barriers

Even today, when we might think nothing more can be done to further increase air travel’s safety and security levels, the Federal Aviation Administration has announced new airliners will require a secondary barrier to cockpit doors. Deal struck for new six-year labour contract along the US west coast

The Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union have finally reached a deal for a new six-year labour contract at 29 west coast ports, bringing to a close a fraught 13 months of stalled negotiations, walk-outs and cargoes emigrating to alternate locations.
The deal was reached with assistance from acting secretary of labour Julie Su, the PMA said in a tweet, adding that the agreement is subject to ratification by both parties. Specific details of the agreement have not been revealed yet. Read more here.


Halifax Employers Association and Council of ILA Locals Ratify Collective Agreement

The Halifax Employers Association, acting for and on behalf of its members, steamship companies and agents employing labour, stevedores and container terminal operators handling vessels in the Port of Halifax, and the Council of I.L.A. Locals for the Port of Halifax have ratified the tentative agreement reached on April 12 for renewal of their collective agreement. The old collective agreement expired on December 31, 2021. The new agreement is for a term of four years and will run until December 31, 2025.

Canada set to seize Volga-Dnepr AN-124

The Canadian government has ordered the seizure of a Volga-Dnepr AN-124 stranded at Toronto Pearson Airport since the start of the war in Ukraine.
