Lufthansa Airline has told customers not to expect any strikes for the time being. There was a recent walk-out due to a wage dispute between the pilots' union Cockpit and the carrier. However, the airline and its pilots were able to reach an agreement at the Frankfurt labour court a couple of weeks ago. Under the terms of the pact, the two parties will resume tariff negotiations.
In other news from the carrier, Lufthansa and Jettainer have recently concluded trials with lightweight containers. After approximately 120,000 trial runs on Lufthansa flights and six months of materials tests, they have successfully concluded a pilot scheme on the use of lightweight containers. During the pilot program, a total of 1,000 of the new-type composite containers were trialled in the global route networks of Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cargo. Construction of the containers from innovative and lighter composites instead of aluminum reduces their weight by 20%, cutting fuel usage and CO2 emissions significantly. The new containers are made of glass fibre, Kevlar fibre or Dyneema® sourced from different manufacturers.
